Osseous Surgery An Overview

Osseous surgery is often recommended for patients with advanced stage periodontal disease. Small incisions are made around the affected teeth and the gum tissue is gently pulled back. This allows deeper access to the deep pockets filled with plaque and tartar buildup that accumulates near the teeth and gum line. When these pockets are left untreated, further bone and tissue loss around the teeth can eventually lead to premature tooth loss. Pockets formed by bacteria cannot be treated at home. It is crucial that patients receive care from a trained periodontist.

Osseous surgery is often recommended when the bone supporting the teeth has been damaged. It is typically performed after all other treatment options for periodontal disease have been exhausted.

Dr. Jody Harrison offers a complete range of periodontal therapy treatment for patients with various stages of gum disease. As an experienced Asheville periodontist, Dr. Harrison will evaluate your gum and dental health to determine if osseous surgery or another treatment is best for you.

The Goal of Osseous Surgery

Osseous surgery aims to eliminate periodontal pockets by elimination increase tissue and disease bone structure. In addition, it also seeks to

  • Reduce the spread of bacteria: Removing plaque and tartar buildup from the tooth root and gum line can help reduce the spread of bacteria.
  • Prevent bone loss: In an advanced case of periodontitis, patients can experience bone and tooth loss. Osseous surgery can help combat tooth and bone loss before it begins.
  • Improve the appearance of your smile: Osseous surgery can help improve the appearance of unsightly teeth and gums.

Osseous Surgery What to Expect

Osseous surgery is typically performed using a local anesthetic. If you suffer from dental fear or anxiety, we offer a full range of sedation dentistry options. We will discuss your sedation choices and determine the best method for you.

Dr. Harrison will carefully push back the gum tissue to gain access to the periodontal pockets and plaque and tartar buildup near the tooth root. The root surfaces are cleaned using specials tools. After the roots are cleaned, any damaged bone structure is carefully smoothed and reshaped to create a more stable and functional base. Reshaping the bone can help reduce the risk of bacteria buildup around the teeth.

The gums are pulled back over the existing bone and sutured into place. The surgical site is carefully dressed to ensure proper healing. If needed, patients can also receive bone grafting in coordination with osseous surgery.

After treatment, Dr. Harrison will discuss any post-op instructions. If necessary, we will work with you to schedule any future treatments or follow up appointments.
