Diagnostic Flap

Sometimes tooth complications can be challenging to diagnose, especially when a tooth (ie, molar or bicuspid) has more than one root. Information from x-rays can be helpful but still inconclusive. In such cases an investigative surgical incision is used to explore the root of the tooth or surrounding bone. The goal could be to detect tartar, debris or bacteria under the gum or a very fine vertical root fracture. The incision and flap reflection facilitate evaluation and future treatment steps.
